M&M's Kitten Stories
This is the 1st of 2 kitten stories that should be read to your children. A Frigid SurpriseThe sun was still hiding behind Foster Mountain as Missi Girl opened her eyes. She had been sleeping on her favorite chair in the living room. Soon, the sun’s warm rays would fill the house with golden light. It was very quiet. Not a sound was heard from the outside. She got up slowly, yawned, stretched, and tiptoed into the sunroom. Surprised, she looked at an outside world of silence. Waves, usually washing gently over rocks at the edge had been forced to cease their soothing activity. The lake was frozen over. Curled up on the sofa in the sunroom, was Mohrle, her little brother, sleeping peacefully. All looked well. She had the feeling that this was going to be a wonderful and exiting day. Missi Girl went into the kitchen for an early breakfast. Glancing through the window at the bird feeder, always an exciting sight, she noticed that wrens and chickadees were already enjoying an early breakfast. Thump! The closing of the bathroom door made Mohrle open his eyes. He yawned. What time was it? It had to be early. The little black kitten joined his sister in the kitchen. “Good morning Sis, what are we doing today?” He asked. “I don’t know.” Missi Girl answered. “Maybe we should go outside and check things out. You know do stuff we always do.” “Yeah, I think you’re right. Let’s sit by the front door and wait until Miss Emma goes for the news paper. If we’re quick, we’re out.” And that’s exactly what happened. Missi Girl was first to spot Chippi, the chipmunk. He too, was enjoying breakfast on sunflower seeds, the once fallen to the ground. The chase was on. Excited, both kittens raced to catch Chippi. Chippi, always on alert, realizing the danger, forgot about eating and to save himself, raced down the embankment and jumped onto the ice. Mohrle, right behind Missi Girl, shifted into high gear and followed Chippi onto the ice. This was great fun. Claws extended for a better grip, Mohrle gave chase. Wow, the ice was slippery. He skidded, picked up speed and raced to catch Chippi. Missi Girl, seeing that Mohrle was faster, lost interest in the chase, stopped and went back onto the shore. Now my friends, I have to tell you, there is a warm spring, just off the left side of the property. The ice is always very thin right there. Chippi, light as he is, made it safely across to reach dry land. However, Mohrle, considerably heavier, crashed through the ice and found himself up to his neck in freezing water. The water was so cold his heart almost stopped. Panic stricken he thought. “I’ve got to get out quick before I die.” Safety was only a few feet away. With a monumental effort he pushed against the ice separating him from the shore. The rapidly forming ice crust around him broke away and with a last big push Mohrle made it to the edge of the lake and dragged himself, freezing and wet onto the rocks. He shook himself rigorously, water flying out of his coat in all directions, while Chippi, safely out of harms way twittered triumphantly, “Let that be a lesson to you, you nasty cat.” Mohrle did not waste another look at the gleeful chipmunk, and hurried to be let into the warm and safety of the house, glad to have escaped certain disaster.
